Continuing the work of Mary Srednovic

Mary Srednovic set up Charity Web Sites, back 2003. The idea was to offer free web sites for people to use for their favourite charities. Mary encouraged senior citizens to develop their skills to help out by building these free websites. Mary also offered her expertise in building traffic to these web sites. Remember this was in the days before everybody was talking about Google, in those days it was Lycos, Altavista and MSN.

Some samples of her work include a lot of work for The Montenegrin Association of America and in particular an excellent page about the Montenegrin Sculptor, Mijo.

The aim here in 2014 is to continue the work of Mary by offering free web site design to charities all over the World. This is done by web designers that we find who just want to put something back. The styles of sites we have are based around the easy to use WordPress blogging platform and Joomla CMS. At the moment we don’t have many well trained Joomla experts available, but we can set a basic site up for you if you wish. This site you are reading now is made with Joomla. WordPress on the other hand is very straightforward and there is a lot of online tutorials available on the internet. WordPress has free and premium themes and we do encourage you to use a premium theme if possible. Our favorite WordPress theme is called Thesis. Thesis sometimes gets called a ‘framework’ because it is very customizable and some of the experts at Thesis customization can produce amazing looking websites. The website that first caught our eye was one that got showcased in the DIYThemes Forum (DIYThemes make Thesis). It was a website called which offers motorhome rental in England and Scotland. What caught our eye initial ly was the gorgeous background image and the fact that the site worked just as well on an iphone as it did on a 27″ monitor. We got in touch with the designers who then pointed us towards the Thesis theme. At the moment there doesn’t seem any reason not to use Thesis.

If you are interested in a charity and are actively involved in fund raising and the organization, why not get in touch and see how we can help? We are also looking for Joomla developers who are prepared to work for their favourite charities. There is another platform we became interested in which is called ModX, if there are any ModX experts out there, please get in touch.

Open Up New Revenue Streams Using Offline Marketing Methods

One of the best things about going on the net for a business start up is the costs are exponentially smaller. If you’re going on vacation, then that is not a problem since all you need is a computer and internet connection. Sure, the web is huge, but there are tons of people who are not on it as much as others and that means opportunities. Most individual marketers on the web will never do this, and of course that is their choice – but they are surely missing out. So with that, check out how you can go offline and make a difference. We have been talking recently to a company, based in The French Alps –  SerreChevalier.ORG –  who had began their business almost entirely offline and are now working their way into making it more of an online lead generation business for ski tourism. The main reason for this is not the cost of advertising offline, but the price of funding a call center to fullfil the orders. It’s interesting the way their business is going, they are advertising in major publications in the resort such as the AltiMag and Altitude magazines.

Quite a few people have actually gotten results by using old fashioned approaches like fliers. There are still places to hang fliers around towns and cities, so just do some testing with it and see what the results are. Print up some page-sized fliers and post them on the free bulletin boards in your local area. Try to make them eye catching and the copy good because that is what will get the job done for you in the fastest and most effective amount of time.

See about being a sponsor for anything that is important to you, or not, and this works because so many businesses to this. There are many ways you can get the media to notice you, plus you can put news about it on your site. That’s when you can tell them that you run your own business. What you are really doing here is offline and relationship marketing, and together they can be very effective.

If you have the money for it, you can get items of all kinds and put your domain name on them and then give them away to people just about anywhere. Also do not forget about the power of business cards, and you can distribute them at all the events you get involved with in your area. It is possible you will be in line somewhere and be talking to somebody who will want one. You can even find ebooks written about using simple marketing devices like the business card. Just remember that there is tremendous diversity with offline marketing. The tips and tricks we’ve talked about here are just a few of them. Always stay positive about this because the numbers of people who are not reached is immense.

Ethical Flower Suppliers

We have had a request for a designer who is skilled in any content management system such as Joomla, WordPress, ModX or similar. The idea of the website is to provide a flower delivery service using ethically sourced flowers. The company is quite keen on supplying the flowers packaged in a greetings card, similar to the business model used by Flower Card of Guernsey. The specification of the site would not be as complex as the Flowercard model, as they do intend to have such a large range of cards and/or flowers. Initially they are looking at:

  • 2 styles of card which will be handwritten and packaged by hand
  • Delivery only to the US and Canada

The rough requirements of the site are:

  • An ecommerce site with 10 different items which will require the ability to add customization messages to each order
  • The ability to be able to build a mailing list (for example by using MailChimp)
  • Payment processing by credit cards and PayPal
  • The ability to easily add extra content for news, special offers etc.

There is a reasonable budget available for the project, but the goal overall is to provide funds for the people in Kenya, Africa involved in the flower production process. Although the charitable angle of the business is going to be one of the selling points of this service, the business will be a real charity and will hopefully provide much needed help for the workers in Kenya.

If any designers are willing to work on this project for the equivalent of the minimum wage in their country, please get in touch as soon as possible. The possibility of a fact finding mission in Kenya is a genuine possibility.
